Kairos Closing

>> Nov 13, 2011 By: Kathy Toth

On Sunday I once again had the priviledge of attending a Kairos Closing ceremony.

I can't begin to tell you how awesome these events are - one has to attend to experience the amazing transformation of these inmates who have been chosen to take part in a Kairos Walk.   These men, full of hopelessness, despair, no self-worth, who have reached rock bottom, come to take the Walk not knowing what the outcome will bring. . . but God knows.

The first Kairos Closing I attended was in October 2010 and at that closing one of the inmates named "Demon" took part in Kairos.  This was a "big deal" as Demon reputedly "ran" the prison, no inmate did anything without his okay.  Demon's real name is Robert and I will refer to him as "Robert" during this testimony because there is no way he can be classified as a demon today.

Robert found our Saviour on his first Kairos Walk and has continued on that righteous path with the help of wonderful Kairos volunteers.  He has been a tremendous inspiration to other inmates and certainly to all those who took the time to bring him into the fold.

Robert was asked to take the podium and speak of his spiritual experience.  He was humbled and didn't really want to be the center of attention.   He had notes he read from but for the most part he spoke from his heart and many tears glistened in the audience's eyes.

Robert is full of life, has a never-ending smile and will be the first to tell you he is blessed, that prayer and spreading the word of God is the most important thing in his life.  After the ceremony I had the privildege (yes, the priviledge) of taking this man in my arms and blessing him.  My heart was full and a lump formed in my throat.   I have no idea why Robert is incarcerated - all I know is he has embraced the Lord and his life is forever changed.

Another highlight of this Kairos Walk; Bishop Lowry was one of the inside volunteers and with his devout wisdom was able to convert a Muslim to becoming a Christian (Read more about this on Bishop Lowry's blog). This inmate is a revered Muslim among the Muslim inmate population, his conversion is a big deal and could put his life in jeopardy.

From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank each and everyone of the Kairos Ministry team who change these inmate's lives so profoundly - you are truly disciples of Christ.
