Why do we serve?

"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." Mark 12: 30-31

These words that Jesus spoke help us to understand that God commands us to not only love Him, but to love others as well. Jesus gave us the perfect example of how to love others when he assumed the role of a humble servant and washed his disciples' feet. He then instructed his followers to do the same: "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them." John 13:14-17

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, described this in simple, practical terms: "Do all the good you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can." We believe that God has uniquely gifted each one of us with a purpose and role for serving others that He has called us to fulfill. At First Methodist Mansfield, we offer opportunities for everyone to find a place to love and serve others through our various ministry areas.
