Worship the King

In the wake of the Michael Jackson media frenzy that we experienced this last week, I thought you, as parents, might be able to use this as a teachable moment.

During VBC a few weeks ago, our core message was “It all comes back to Jesus,” as you may have heard. Each day we focused on a different aspect of what a life of following Jesus looks like. We answered the questions of:

  • How do I know God?
  • How do I know God loves me?
  • How do I live for God each day?
  • And What does God want me to do?

On that last question, the answer was God wants us to Worship Him. He wants us to get to know him through a friendship with Jesus and then worship him above all else. In our drama for this message, we illustrated how we often get caught up in worshiping cultural icons such as movie stars, musicians, sports figures, etc. The kids seemed to really get it. We explained that it is ok to admire people and their special talents or gifts, but to recognize that those talents are from God and to be used to serve God. And that God himself should get the most of our mind, heart, and soul. While it is not for us to judge what motives these artists and athletes have for doing what they do, it for us to decide how we will spend our time, our focus and our energy.

Use this focus on the “King of Pop” to help your children understand the true King that is worthy of our worship.

“Jesus said, love the lord your God with all of your heart and with all your sould, and with all your mind.”  -Matthew 22:37
