Faith

Ask

  • Have you ever met George Washington?
  • Do you believe that he was the first president of the United States?
  • Why do you believe that?

Say something like this:  We believe George Washington lived and was the first president because people who lived when he did (eyewitnesses) wrote about him.  Even though we didn’t see him, reliable people told us about him and his experiences.

We believe in Jesus even though we have never seen Him.  We believe in Him because eyewitnesses told us about Him and His experiences when He lived on earth, and these stories are written down in the Bible.  (Over 500 people saw Jesus alive after He died on the cross. 1 Corinthians 15:6)  The Bible is reliable and we can believe in Jesus even though we have never seen Him.

Activity of faithfulness

Tell your child that you will do something together after dinner (watch a movie, play a game, take a walk, etc).  After dinner, when they ask you to do the activity, say, “I don’t want to.”   Let them sit with that for a minute or two.

Then ask:

  • How did you feel when I said that I didn’t want to do it?  (Disappointed, sad, mad, etc)
  • Why should we do what we say?  (Others will be able to trust us, to count on us; others will respect us, etc.)

Describe a faithful person.  (Someone you can count on to do what he is supposed to do or says he will do, one who is loyal or keeps his word).  Try to think of faithful people you know personally.

God is faithful! (Deuteronomy 7:9 says that God is a faithful God, which keeps covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keeps His commandments to a thousand generations.)

We should be faithful to God because He is faithful to us.  Now be sure to do the activity together!
